Reading Choices: Smartphone and Newspaper

I stumbled upon a few important statistics regarding consumers and mobile devices today. They came from Deloitte’s “State of the Media Democracy” survey. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • 20% of Millennials had read their favorite newspaper on a smartphone in the previous six months, up from 9% last year
  • 11% of Millennials said using a smartphone was their favorite method of reading a newspaper, up from 3% last year
  • 42% of respondents had streamed or downloaded a movie on a digital device in 2011, up 28% from last year

While these numbers certainly don’t call for companies to abandon all channels except for mobile, their upward trend points to the fact that people are becoming more comfortable using their mobile devices to accomplish tasks that were typically done via other methods.

And as smartphone ownership levels rise, we can expect to see these types of figures continue to rise as well.

So…as our customers and prospects become more comfortable using their phone to accomplish tasks, the spotlight clearly gets pointed on businesses everywhere. Are they adapting quickly enough to communicate with the mobile audience?
